Presentation Academy, a 177-year-old Catholic academy for girls located in downtown Louisville and the city’s oldest continuously operating high school, will celebrate a facility that has been a part of the school’s campus for over 71 years during its “Farewell to the 1938 Gym” party on Saturday, June 13.
The farewell to the historic school’s longtime gym is scheduled 6 – 9 p.m. (all times EDT) in the gym, which is located at the corner of Breckinridge Street and Library Lane, next to the main Presentation campus building. The old gym will be replaced this fall by the school’s new $5 million, state-of-the-art Arts & Athletic Center at 900 South Fourth, which is under construction but set for completion this summer. The new center will be open when students retur n in August, and the old gym will be razed sometime after that.
A live auction of memorabilia and other items from the old gym is scheduled to begin at approximately 7 p.m. This memorabilia includes rare items used by the late Vivian Dunlevy, Presentation’s legendary longtime coach and athletic director who passed away in early April. Ms. Dunlevy served the Presentation Academy family for 39 years as a teacher, and for 35 of those years as athletic director and varsity coach for basketball, field hockey and volleyball. She retired from coaching in 1985 and ended her teaching career in 1990.
During her tenure as basketball coach her teams compiled a 314-120 record and her 1972-73 team won the first girls’ Louisville Invitational Tournament (LIT). In addition to being the home of Presentation’s athletic program, the old gym also in the past served as the school’s theater, and is still used for all school liturgies and gatherings. The gym property is owned by Spalding University, and was acquired by the University when it assumed ownership of Presentation in 1995. In 2005, Presentation Academy became an independently operating school under the guidance of its Board of Trustees, but Spalding retained ownership of the gym and its long-range plan is to raze the facility and replace it with a “green space” on that parcel of property.

Admission to the “Farewell to the Gym” event is $15 per person, and is open to everyone 18 years of age and older. . The auction will be conducted by Harold Helm and staff, of RE/MAX 100, Louisville, KY. Mr. Helm is a successful auctioneer who has received awards and achieved national recognition for the company’s auction work.
The construction site for the new Arts & Athletic Center, which will replace the aging gym, is located at 900 South Fourth Street and is adjacent to the school’s historic campus at Fourth and Breckinridge streets. The property was purchased by the school in Sept. 2006 and construction of the new structure began last spring. The Presentation Arts & Athletic Center, the first major addition to the school’s campus since 1948, will be completed this summer and students will start using the new structure in August when the 2009-2010 academic year begins.
